Great Price for

Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3, Review

Dated, sure, but the illustrations and liveliness of the text more than make up. Bill Martin is (was?) a genius in writing children's books - see 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear...' by Eric Carle and Bill Martin, and then see 'The Grouchy Ladybug' with only Eric Carle. You'll see what I'm talking about.

Ugh, Bill Martin Jr., I'm embarrassed for you... - AB - Austin, TX
This really is a terrible terrible sequel to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom/ABC. Let me start by saying that if our toddler could rate books on a scale of 1-10, he'd probably give this one a solid 6. (I should also add that he doesn't have a very high bar when it comes to books. I doubt he would give any book less than a 5.) He recognizes the artwork and format, he likes numbers, and he seems to like the book OK. It would be unfair to expect him to enjoy any book as much as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (which he definitely would have given a 10), and that's not the problem.

The problem is that my wife and I, and even his babysitters and miscellaneous relatives, all find this book teeth-gnashingly painful to read. I'd find it hard to believe that anyone who was familiar with and enjoyed Chicka Chicka Boom Boom would NOT be extremely disappointed with this book. It just doesn't flow. It doesn't have rhythm. Our son doesn't sing along like he did with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom because it just doesn't have any hook to it at all.

It just seems hastily thrown together. I keep imagining the following conversation between a publishing exec and Bill Martin Jr. happening over lunch. "So, Bill, we were thinking maybe we should, you know, build on the CCBB franchise. Maybe a counting book, doesn't that sound great? No really really - let's give it a try... Now now, stop being so stubborn. Why don't you just write down some thoughts on this napkin and maybe it won't be so bad. ...Okay, done? Noooo, ha ha, stop being such a perfectionist - really I think that it's great! Just let me take that and I'll get Lois to draw up pics and I'll send you a royalty check soon. Awesome. Hey, you look great by the way. Ciao!"

I know what you're thinking... You're thinking, "Sheesh, he's being a bit harsh, it's just a children's book. Could it really be that bad?" Um, yes. The only people I would recommend this book to are Lois Elhert completists. (It's OK, you get pass, I recognize she's a genius.) For the rest of us who more like "Lois who?", your money is better spent on, well, almost anything else.

this is a fun book to read aloud. it's impossible NOT to read in a sing-song voice. My grandson loves it!

Not as good as the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - Sarah Green - New York, NY
I have to admit we returned this book. Our daughter loved Chicka Chicka Boom Boom: Anniversary Edition and we thought that this would be just as good. It didn't quite have the same appeal. We tried reading it a few times and even we were bored. Perhaps it was just too much like the original, without being different enough to keep our attention.
