World History Book - Amy - NC
We are a Christian homeschooling family and are using this book along with the Kingfisher equivalent as a part of our world history schedule this year. There are lots of great pictures in this book but unfortunately there is a lot of nudity. I understand cultural differences, etc but when a book is written for children and the people did have clothes because half of the other people on the page are dressed, why not just make them all dressed? Not a big deal though, I just took my marker and made little clothes for all of the unnecessary nudity.
Other than that, the book holds the attention of my active boys and makes for a great short but meaty lesson for History.

Too much nudity for a children's book! - M. Tarkalson - Idaho
I got this book to read with my children. My husband spent over an hour putting clothes on all the people throughout the book. I'm not impressed with the illustrations. We can understand the history without all the nudity. I don't want to expose my kids to soft porn. It is written well, but if you decide to get it for your children to view, I would suggest a black sharper to add clothing, then the book is great!

Eeeks..I'm going to say OK - Michelle Greene -
I typically love anything Usborne, so I don't know why I can't get into it. This just isn't my favorite. This is required for Sonlight 2nd grade curiculum. I have many friends who look fondly on this book. I wonder if I had children who liked to get up in my lap and read if I would like it better? I have triplets and they each have different personalities and none of them look at the pictures while I'm reading it. I find myself just reading the required pages and moving on.

Illustrations totally inappropriate - Caregiver - Falls Church, va United States
I agree with other reviewers that this book has WAY too much nudity in it. The nudity is totally unnecessary--it contributes nothing to the concepts being taught. For example, on the page about Crete, the caption of one picture is, "The rooms in Minoan palaces were covered with bright frescoes. This is one of the Queen's rooms in the palace of Knossos." And a beautiful room is depicted, BUT in the foreground are a man and woman talking on a bench. And the woman's front is completely exposed! This seems to me totally gratuitous. Same thing with the man running in the Greek race. If you want children to understand that these men competed naked, you can show figures far away and/or stylized. You don't need a close-up, realistic drawing showing pubic hair.

Even many of the examples of cultural art depict nude people. Surely other examples of their art could be used in a children's book.

I would not recommend this book to anyone. Scores of its illustrations are totally inappropriate for children of any age, and frankly I don't want to look at them either. It's going back.
