The Usborne Internet-Linked First Encyclopedia of Science Review

When we first received this book with our Second grade curriculum I was afraid it would be too basic, but we quickly learned how wonderful a resource these books are! My daughter soaked up this book like a sponge. She would ask to take it to bed with her, so she could read extra pages, and she jumped up and down with glee when I told her we would be buying more for next year. How many Science books can you say that about?

These are fantastic for a child's first introduction to Science, whether read aloud to Kindergarten-aged children, or given to older children for independent reading. Vocabulary words that are introduced throughout the book are listed in the back, if you chose to have your child work on memorization. The internet links that I have used, that are listed in the pages, are age-appropriate, and a lot of fun. I sometimes spend over and hour searching for sites to go along with what we've been learning! How wonderful to have it right there on the page!

We will continue to use these throughout Third grade, and once we get through these, I'm sure we'll be sticking with Usborne books.

Since the word "First" is in the title, I felt the need to explain that this is not exclusively a Kindergartner's Science book. My Second, going on Third grader adores them. I even learned some things from this book! There are several others in this series, and amazon.com has one or two on file that you can browse, if you choose. I recommend that you do, just in case you get them to find that your child already knows the information.

I, personally, cannot say enough good things about this book, though.

good start to teaching science to little ones - booktofind -
I purchased this book because I will be homeschooling my 1st grader. We have not started the school year yet but I am excited to use it. This book is just a basic intro to different parts of science and most pages have a small/easy experiment to do to reinforce the idea. I particuarly liked this book also because it did not cover evolution and we are creationists. It did not cover creation either...but it did hit several other interesting parts of science.

Science Nerds - Lindsey - Georgia, USA
My children (2 and 3) adore this book. Much of it is over their heads, but they learn a little more each time they read through it. There are some fabulous pictures!
This contents of this book are as follows:
What is science?
What scientists do
Our Universe
What is the Earth made of?
The seasons
Weather
Living things
Cells
Plants
Animals
Your body
Bones and muscles
What happens to food?
Your brain and senses
Atoms and molecules
Solids, liquids and gas
How materials change
Energy
Forces
Hot and cold
Gravity
Floating
Friction
Magnets
Light and color
Sound
Electricity
Computers
I give the book 4, not 5 stars for 2 reasons. The first is that much of the information is a repeat if you own other Usborne First Encyclopedias. The second is that they switch between using technical terms (coccyx, vertebrae, fibula, etc.) to non-technical terms (breast bone, finger bones, jaw bone) in the same photograph. I wish they would use the technical terms all the time, instead of hopping back and forth.

Magic Tree House #29: Christmas in Camelot Review

We found out that our four year old was excited about listening to chapter books - but after a few here and there that we found to be age appropriate, we were without ideas. We asked our local librarian who really didn't have any ideas for us - and then we lucked into Magic Tree House books. They are a treasure! Annie and Jack's adventures are not only age appropriate for a curious 4 year old, but they introduce history and situations that we would be otherwise unlikely to grab her attention (Shakespeare, civil rights, etc). These books never get old to her - and it is rather refreshing to not have all the marketing items (dolls, bed sheets, etc) that usually get pushed with a product.

Magic Tree House #29: Christmas in Camelot Overview

The Magic Tree House series has become a staple for inspiring kids to read. Christmas in Camelot is a very special Magic Tree House book. Here, author Mary Pope Osborne uses the literary skills for which she’s known to create a longer, more in-depth story featuring the characters kids have come to love. The result is magical: a fast-paced but detailed, easy-to-read story. Jack and Annie go on a quest to save Camelot, a quest that will prove to a beleaguered King Arthur that children and imagination really can make a difference.

From the Hardcover edition.

Magic Tree House #29: Christmas in Camelot Specifications

A cup, a compass, a key: the magic tree house has brought siblings Annie and Jack to Camelot, where they embark on a mysterious mission to find these enigmatic gifts. In this special hardcover addition to the bestselling Magic Tree House series, the young adventurers must travel to the Otherworld, an "ancient, enchanted land beyond the edge of the Earth, the place where all magic began" to save Camelot from dark wizard Mordred's evil spell. If they fail, Camelot will be forgotten forever. Fans of the beloved, highly readable series by Mary Pope Osborne will rise to the challenge of this longer, more complex companion to her other titles, which include Earthquake in the Early Morning and Twister on Tuesday. As in every story in the sequence, Jack and Annie bravely plunge into their quest, learning about a culture and time very far removed from their own, and prove once again that children can make a difference. A Ludicrous Story - dream factory - Triangulum, M33
Wouldn't common sence tell you that if you have the word "Christmas" in the title of a book, then there would be something (anything) about Christmas in the story.

Well, no such logic nor luck in this story. Instead you get a 'giant slimy' dragon, 'golden skin, fairies dancing in a circle, Merlin the warlock, and the 'Christmas knight' who put the kids under some spell. Oh yea "and the white stag carried us to the otherworld".

What is this baloney?
Christmas is about Christ!!
Or you may bend it in to some insane-a-claus story.
But to pervert it into this tale is ludicrous.

Great Price for

Pollyanna Review

Call me an overly-sensitive sap, but I think Pollyanna is a wonderful story. While it may not be "great literature," its optimistic, silver-lining-on-every-cloud message is inspiring, valuable, and timeless. Pollyanna demonstrates the "proactivity" described in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: namely that you have the power and the freedom to choose your response in any given situation. As human beings, we have the ability to choose to not be controlled by our circumstances; happiness is a choice. Granted, constant happiness is not realistic, and Pollyanna experiences challenges that would bring anyone down, and we see her humanity when she loses her ability to see the silver lining. I can see how cynical people would complain about how unrealistic the book is, but it is obviously about an EXCEPTIONAL person, someone we should all strive to emulate; and these exceptional people who can choose, maybe not happiness in every circumstance, but at least to find meaning and a reason and drive to keep living DO EXIST (see the extreme example of Victor Frankl's experience in concentration camps).

I pity the kids whose negative reviews tell me that they've lost their childhood innocence. Maybe the ends are too neatly tied in the end and maybe the characters are cliche, but its sweetness and innocence and the overall inspiring message of optimism make Pollyanna worth reading - and aren't those neatly tied happy endings just so satisfying sometimes? And to those who complain of her similarities to Anne Shirley - what's wrong with that? The story IS different; and we can all stand to benefit from reading more positive, life-affirming, soul-nurturing books.

Pollyanna Overview

The whole town is playing the game, and the whole town is wonderfully happier—and all because of one little girl who taught the people a new game, and how to play it.

Suddenly orphaned, Pollyanna is sent across the country to a small town in Vermont, where she will live with her strict Aunt Polly. But Pollyanna doesn't seem to notice how stern and unfeeling her aunt really is. When feeling unhappy, she simply plays her “glad” game—finding a silver lining in every cloud. Eventually, Pollyanna brightens the lives of everyone in town with her infectious game, and finds a home for every stray cat, dog, and child she encounters. But then a terrible accident happens and Pollyanna can't find anything to feel glad about anymore. All her new friends turn out to support her, but will that be enough to restore Pollyanna's cheerful outlook on life?

Pollyanna - D. E. W. Turner - Hereford, AZ, USA
When I saw on www.amazon.com that this book was back in print, I couldn't resist! I have to admit, even now at my age, the book is excellent, a classic. And I was "glad" to see that I had owned a complete, unabridged version of the book when I was small. The School Library Journal lists it as being for Grade 7 and up; the Booklist says grades 3 - 6; I first read the unabridged version when I was 4 years old - and read it over and over until I was in seventh grade! I must confess as I re-read the book, that I was picturing the drawings that were in the book I used to own. Two drawings in particular stay in my mind - the one of Pollyanna being hit by the car and the one of the cat opening her bedroom door as her Aunt Polly cries out, "the child - will never walk again!" This book, while it had illustrations, did not have any "graphic" illustrations. What a shame. The one thing I did not remember from the version I had as a child was Jimmy Bean's statement about halfway through the book: "I ain't no beggar, an' biz'ness is biz'ness, even with Ladies' Aiders, I'm thinkin'." While I like the Disney version, too, the original is much better - and so much different from the Disney version!

The Cheerful Cure - Gale Finlayson -
Newly-orphaned ten-year-old Pollyanna is sent to live with a stern aunt in a distant town. Aunt Polly forbids her to mention her dead father's name and treats her like an unwanted poor relation--which is precisely what she is. At least Nancy, the kindly housekeeper, treats the lonely child with compassion. But Pollyanna has learned from her father to make lemonade out of life's lemons; she tries to be cheerful despite drawbacks and dealings with mean or sour adults. Without realizing it the little girl offers hope and cheer to others in town--in her charming, unsophisticated manner. Soon
the Glad Game is being played by her neighbors--adults as well as children--for light and joy bubble forth from her.

Tragedy strikes when Pollyanna is struck by an automobile and becomes crippled. The town rallies to her support and even stern Aunt Polly--harboring some secret grudge from the past--unbends to prove more human than previously demonstrated. The 1913 style, when radios were newly in fashion, is quaint by today's standards, but the spirit of optimism, almost overdone, provides a valuable lesson. We cannot control what happens to us--only how we react to those events; thus, this charming story offers gentle spiritual guidance without being preachy. Truly an American classic for kids of all ages.

a have to get - -
i read this book and i am now urging my mom to read it to my brothers . it is a great read aloud. also a wonderul book for children of all ages . a definent have to get.

Wonderful World of Horses Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Book) Review

My daugter is 9 and loves anything to do with horses. So, when I was strapped for other ideas at the near-last minute for Christmas, I checked Amazon and found this book, along with a horse-related board game. This book is not very thick. In fact, I guess I was at first concerned by it's relatively few pages, compared to other activity books I have purchased for her in the past. However, the drawings in the book are of higher quality than any other activity book she has had. She really has enjoyed taking her time to try to match her coloring skills to that quality. All things considered, she is happy with it, so I am happy with it.

An okay book - J. H. -
I bought this book for my 6-year-old son. I have a collection of these small books in a bag that we take to restaurants to help ease the wait time. My son told me that this book is way to easy for him (he's in kindergarten) and that he much prefers word search books. So, if your child is age 3-5, this book would probably keep him or her quite entertained. Much older that that, however, this book is probably not for your child.

Check Out The First Four Years (Little House) for $4.98

The First Four Years (Little House) Review

Even though it's different from the other books, which is both good and bad at once, i like this book.
I think it's sad to read about all the troubles they had, with diphtheria, the house that burnt down, the loss of Laura's son, etc. It reminds me of the other period she left out -- the year the Ingalls spent in South Troy, Minnesota and Burr Oak, Iowa.
As some of you say, "These Happy Golden Years" was intended to be the last "Little House" book, but according to "Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Biography" by William Anderson, the readers wanted to know what happened next, so Laura finally said "well, there MIGHT just be another book underway" and then wrote this draft which was released post mortem. I do think the decision to release the book was correct, otherwise I fear that someone else would do it, just like they did to the lost Laura years.

But, back to the book. Laura first refuses to become a farmer's wife because of all the shores and the fact that they might not be very rich. Almanzo manages to make a deal with her to try it for three years, and then a fourth year - "The Year of Grace". Unless I misunderstand it, Laura didn't like living in town, either. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Those years were really troubled years. Almanzo buys things on credit and plan to pay for them when the harvest were done. But when harvest time came, there was a hailstorm that destroyed the crops; if Almanzo didn't wait the last days they would be hundreds of dollars richer. In addition, Laura first gave birth to a baby girl, Rose Wilder Lane, and years later, a baby boy which died 3 weeks later. After that Laura's and Almanzo's home burnt down in a fire. Those and other events described in the book are really sad events which I can understand why she didn't put in a children's book.

I like the book, but I must warn that the storytelling is different from the other 8 Laura books, and that the storytelling that is expressed in this book might be a bit "disappointing".

The First Four Years (Little House) Overview

For the first time in the history of the Little House books, this new edition features Garth Williams’ interior art in vibrant, full color, as well as a beautifully redesigned cover.

Laura Ingalls Wilder is beginning life with her new husband, Almanzo, in their own little house. Laura is a young pioneer wife now, and must work hard with Almanzo, farming the land around their home on the South Dakota prairie. Soon their baby daughter, Rose, is born, and the young family must face the hardships and triumphs encountered by so many American pioneers.

And so Laura Ingalls Wilder's adventure as a little pioneer girl ends, and her new life as a pioneer wife and mother begins. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier past and a heartwarming, unforgettable story.

depressing - LibKat - Cape Cod, MA
I love Laura Ingalls Wilder as an author. I think her books are interesting and well written. Her descriptions of events, places, people, and time periods cannot be beat and it draws you right in. However, this book is just awful and depressing.

the struggles of a young pioneer couple - Sheena Carver -
I love this book because it tells about Laura and Manly's first few years of marriage. The manuscript was not prepared for publication by Laura, because it was not found until after her death. Therefore, the book is not as well-written or detailed as the previous Little House books. However, if you enjoy Laura's other books, this book will be of interest. I found out things about Laura's life that I never knew until I read this book.

Biittersweet end - M - I wait behind the wall, gnawing away at your reality
This book really is only for die-hard Little House fans. It wasn't published till after Laura and Rose had died, for 'Golden years' was meant to be the end of the Little House series. It's definitely not for little kids, and if your little one is a fan of the series, I wouldn't recommend telling them of this book till they get older, since this has a different feel to the story. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other LH books, but that should be expected with Ms. Wilder's intentions and the fact that this book was a posthumous publication. It's not a bad read on it's own, though, it's just different because it's sadder. Definitely a book for older readers.

The Kingfisher First Human Body Encyclopedia (Kingfisher First Reference) Review

Like all the other Kingfisher "First" books, this one is lovely and well suited to elementary-age minds and reading levels. Lots of pictures and nice, large print; lots of cool experiments. As for the controversial section on reproduction, this is exactly how it reads: "To make a baby, a man puts his penis inside a woman's vagina to release sperm. The sperm swim toward the egg and fertilize it. The fertilized egg grows into a baby inside the uterus." Frankly, if I could re-write or delete one sentence from this book, I would find nothing else objectionable--but I'm just not sure my six-year-old is ready to wrap his head around this information.

The Kingfisher First Human Body Encyclopedia (Kingfisher First Reference) Overview

This informative and activity-filled reference introduces younger children to human biology in a lively and accessible way. The book's thematic structure makes it easy for young readers to understand the various systems and organs that make up the body. Dozens of activities and experiments, including - Keeping a food diary (to analyze diet) - provide children with the opportunity to reinforce newly learned information. Full-color spreads address the questions that fascinate children, such as: What are we made of?, Why do we need to sleep?, and How do we breathe? A reference section at the back of the book includes a glossary, an index, and an 'Amazing facts' section. Special Features: Over 1,000 appealing, colorful photographs and illustrations. Clear and easy-to-understand definitions. Related activities and projects. Vocabulary carefully chosen for the 5-8 yr. reading level. Cross-references encourage further exploration.

Chinese and English Nursery Rhymes: Share and Sing in Two Languages Review

I really liked the book and wanted to like the CD. My husband and kids seem to like the CD but I have a hard time listening for long periods as the kids singing on the CD sing out of tune which is not very noticeable if you focus on the lady singing on the CD but since each track has children singing it becomes quite distracting that they don't sing in tune. DK First Encyclopedia Review

I read this book to my daughter when she was 7, before she could really read herself. More accurately, we went through this book together, looking at the many excellent photos as I explained the diverse range of topics in some depth, thus going well beyond the actual text in the book. I think that's the best use of the book, although children reading it on their own should still enjoy it and benefit from it.

I did spot a few minor errors in the book, which I was able to correct, and I used these errors to demonstrate to my daughter that one shouldn't automatically believe everything written in books. Nevertheless, I can still recommend this book for children about 4 to 8 years old, especially since there aren't many competing books which cover this range of topics at this level with photos of this quality.

We've now moved on to One Million Things: A Visual Encyclopedia, also published DK, which likewise has excellent photos but is a much larger and more detailed children's encyclopedia. So far, it's looking very promising.

DK First Encyclopedia - Mickey -
I was very pleased with this purchase. The book arrived quickly and in excellent shape. It has beautiful pictures and info that children (and even adults) of all ages will enjoy.

EXCELLENT Encyclopedia for pre-K - 2nd grade... - Learning All The Time - USA
DK is a master at laying out information in appealing yet digestible chunks for children.

For example, opening the book up at random, "Rivers and Lakes" begins with this introductory paragraph "Many rivers start as a stream or spring, high up on a moutainside. As the water flows downhil, other streams flow into it to make a river."

Then there are other paragraphs, each illustrated with 1-4 photographs, with the following headings: Waterfalls, Stages of a river, River transportation, River life, Lakes, Salty lakes, Largest Lakes, Lake Life -- all on a two page spread!

My kids loved to look through this book when they were younger. Sometimes we would go through a few pages as our "bedtime story."

Highly recommended.

A good first encyclopedia - Padma - Massachusetts, USA
This is one of my 4 yr old's most favorite books right now. It is also a book that we like to read to the kid.

If you, like us, hear a lot of 'Why' , 'What' , 'How' from your kids, you will enjoy owning/reading this book.

I have not read this entire book. I thought I was getting the story of the deer. This is not the story of the Deer, That would be Bambi by Felix Salten. This book is about a young adult named Bambina (Bambi for short). Five stars are indicated simply to keep from judging the story wrongly since I have not yet read it.

Check Out Thuvia Maid of Mars (Barsoom Book #4)

Thuvia Maid of Mars (Barsoom Book #4) Review

I think this may be the best of the Mars series. Although Thuvia's emotions are discussed like a man's, she is a character in her own right. She is also given the tough choice between her life and embracing another ruler. The romance in this story also seems more enchanting than the rest of the Mars series, but perhaps it's because we see Burrough's attempt at the woman's point of view through her own thoughts instead of the abstractions he uses to describe previous character's desires, like those of Dejah Thoris. Granted, Burroughs isn't perfect in that his women think and react like slightly more feminine versions of his male characters and do what is expected of them, but the attempt makes his women certainly seem more human than before. In short, this novel is one I would recommend to anyone reading Burroughs for the first time, especially a female reader, because it has both the adventure and fighting his novels always have and realistic characters which they often lack.

Thuvia Maid of Mars (Barsoom Book #4) Overview

Andrew Stanton of Pixar Animation Studios has confirmed that his next project is going to be a film adaptation of John Carter of Mars. This is the fourth book in the John Carter series.

In this novel the focus shifts from John Carter, Warlord of Mars, and Dejah Thoris of Helium, protagonists of the first three books in the series, to their son, Carthoris, prince of Helium, and Thuvia, princess of Ptarth. Helium and Ptarth are both prominent Barsoomian city state/empires, and both Carthoris and Thuvia were secondary characters in the previous novel.

Burroughs, out of his box - Kacey LaCrosse - new albany, Indiana
Thuvia, Maid of Mars isn't your typical Burroughs' science fiction novel. Although it shares many of the elements that Burroughs' books usually have, in this novel, Burroughs goes out of his box with some new inventive elements that come to life.

A planetary romance - Jeff Butler - New York, NY
The novel can be classed as a planetary romance. This genre is a subset of science fiction, similar to sword and sorcery, but including scientific elements. Most of the action in a planetary romance is on the surface of an alien world, usually includes sword fighting, monsters, supernatural elements as telepathy rather than magic, and involves civilizations echoing those on Earth in pre-technological eras, particularly composed of kingdoms or theocratic nations. Spacecraft may appear, but are usually not central to the story. (From Source: Wikipedia).

Some background information - Noam Josephides -
Burroughs began writing Thuvia, Maid of Mars, in April 1914, at the time describing it as a 'Carthoris' story. After a break in California, he had begun a furious writing schedule, including other works as well as what was to become Thuvia, Maid of Mars. A new editor, Robert H. Davis, had replaced Newell Metcalf, the previous editor of All-Story Magazine (which had published Burrough's previous Barsoom novels), at the now amalgamated All-story Cavalier Weekly. Davis wrote to Burroughs on June 12, 1914 after reading previous fiction (including Tarzan), suggesting ideas and suggesting a meeting. (From Source: Wikipedia).

Check Out How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World (Dragonfly Books) for $2.82

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World (Dragonfly Books) Review

Delectable is the word for this whimsical flight of fancy around the world. It begins with a girl opening a cookbook, and the narrator states, "Making an apple pie is really easy. First, get all the ingredients at the market. Mix them well, bake and serve. Unless, of course, the market is closed." In that case, it's time for a steamship voyage to Europe for semolina wheat, a train ride to France for a chicken (which will lay a fresh egg upon arriving home), a boat trip to Sri Lanka for cinnamon (peeled from the kurundu tree under which a leopard is napping). On to England for a milk cow, and Vermont for apples.

When the cheerful protagonist arrives home (by airplane, don't want the ingredients to spoil), she prepares the ingredients and serves up a warm pie for all her friends (sans ice cream, as the market is still closed). The book ends with a recipe for apple pie.

This story is a wonderful early introduction to the concepts of trade, culture, and cooking, and for thoughtful readers may provide an opportunity to discuss the effect of globalization on national economies. It's infused with a lighthearted wit and and gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "As American as apple pie." A delicious excursion.

The information given for each country sparked inquisitiveness in my daughter. We then studied together in depth the cultures behind each country the little girl visits. Great read for enjoyment or homeschooling! Two thumbs up!

love it on many levels - cambridge reader - cambridge, ma United States
This book meets all my basic criteria for reading to my 3.5 y.o daughter: 1) it depicts a female character taking initiative, being adventurous/ resourceful; 2) it has charming illustrations; and 3) my daughter enjoys it as much as I do. But then on top of that it 4)has great subtle humor (LOVE the surprise ending of the last page!) 5) offers a geography lesson (my daughter loves pointing out the locations on the map on the inside cover , 6) teaches about where food really comes from and shows respect for nature, and 7) teaches about sharing your efforts with friends (who are multicultural, no less!). This book is absolutely perfect! (with one minor complaint- the map in the inside cover is badly placed, so three key locations in the story- italy, france, and england- are hard to locate, as they fall right in the seam.)

I love this book!

"Lord of the Flies" (Teach Yourself Revision Guides) Review

This book was awesome. I couldn't stop reading it. It was about surviving on an island and finding more people. So I'm going to write a review. Here is what the book is about.

Two boys, Ralph and Piggy were alone on an island, so they thought. When they went to the beach, they found a conch. Since Piggy didn't want to blow it Ralph blew and more kids came. Since there were more kids, some people wanted the leader to be a kid named Jack and some people wanted Ralph to be leader. They took a vote and Ralph was leader.

One day, they went to a rock and climbed it. Ralph and Jack and a kid named Roger came with them. Then, they went down. They then decide to split in to two groups but they would still stay in touch. They then walked back to their base.

Another day, Jack's group stole Piggy's glasses and he got mad and told them to give them back. They said no. Then, they invaded (invaded what?). Later, a guy on a boat came to bring them back home. He asked if any were dead. Ralph said two. They took them and they never went back to the island.

They got rescued. Most stories like this; at the end they get rescued. I always predict that and I'm always right. This book should be read by kids. It's a great book. The font is a little small but I still liked it.

"Lord of the Flies" (Teach Yourself Revision Guides) Overview

This English literature revision guide for GCSE English students discusses William Golding's "Lord of the Flies". It features "mind maps" which summarize the entire work, icons, symbols, diagrams, cartoons and storyboards.

"Lord of the Flies" (Teach Yourself Revision Guides) Specifications

William Golding's classic tale about a group of English schoolboys who are plane-wrecked on a deserted island is just as chilling and relevant today as when it was first published in 1954. At first, the stranded boys cooperate, attempting to gather food, make shelters, and maintain signal fires. Overseeing their efforts are Ralph, "the boy with fair hair," and Piggy, Ralph's chubby, wisdom-dispensing sidekick whose thick spectacles come in handy for lighting fires. Although Ralph tries to impose order and delegate responsibility, there are many in their number who would rather swim, play, or hunt the island's wild pig population. Soon Ralph's rules are being ignored or challenged outright. His fiercest antagonist is Jack, the redheaded leader of the pig hunters, who manages to lure away many of the boys to join his band of painted savages. The situation deteriorates as the trappings of civilization continue to fall away, until Ralph discovers that instead of being hunters, he and Piggy have become the hunted: "He forgot his words, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet." Golding's gripping novel explores the boundary between human reason and animal instinct, all on the brutal playing field of adolescent competition. --Jennifer Hubert

Beatrice's Goat Review

I purchased this for a kindergarten teacher. She liked the illustrations, Beatrice's desire to go to school, the African setting for a bit of geography, the kindness and appreciation of animals, the fact that it was a true story and a gift that brought happiness and economic assistance to the entire community. It is truly a lovely book in many ways and offered many fantastic ideas for even the youngest children to discuss and remember. It would be a great book even for a preschooler or a young reader.

Beatrice's Goat Overview

More than anything, Beatrice longs to be a schoolgirl. But in her small African village, only children who can afford uniforms and books can go to school. Beatrice knows that with six children to care for, her family is much too poor.

But then Beatrice receives a wonderful gift from some people far away -- a goat! Fat and sleek as a ripe mango, Mugisa (which means "luck") gives milk that Beatrice can sell. With Mugisa's help, it looks as if Beatrice's dream may come true after all.

Page McBrier and Lori Lohstoeter beautifully recount this true story about how one child, given the right tools, is able to lift her family out of poverty. Thanks to Heifer Project International -- a charitable organization that donates livestock to poor communities around the world -- other families like Beatrice's will also have a chance to change their lives.

Beatrice's Goat Specifications

When her family's fat, sleek new goat arrives in her poor Ugandan village, little Beatrice hugs her close and whispers, "Mama says you are our lucky gift...." And indeed it is true. Soon the goat bears two kids and provides enough milk to both feed the family and sell for profit. Until the goat arrived, life was very hard for Beatrice and her five brothers and sisters. The family could not afford to send the children to school, and it was difficult to make ends meet. Magically this one small animal, one of 12 given the village, opens up a new world of health and prosperity. Before the year is out, Beatrice happily realizes her dream of becoming a school girl and her delighted family moves into a sturdy new house.

Based on the true account of one family who received aid from Heifer Project International, a charitable organization that donates livestock to poor communities around the world, this moving story is eloquently and gracefully recounted. Vividly evoking the lush tropical landscape of central Africa, Lohstoeter's rich, deeply-hued illustrations perfectly complement the text and make Beatrice and her world affectingly real. Although she may live far removed from the comfortable middle-class lives of many young readers, it is clear that Beatrice is a girl of unusual heart and, like any child, filled with hopes and dreams. In her afterword Hillary Rodham Clinton writes, "Beatrice's Goat is a heartwarming reminder that families, wherever they live, can change their lives for the better." A portion of the publisher's proceeds goes to support the Heifer Project. (Ages 4 to 8) --Marianne Painter

This book along with "Tomo I" are without a doubt the AP Spanish Lit Exam. I had both books during the last school year and 4 of the featured stories in the books appeared on the MC section and another 4 appeared on the free response section. Bottom line if you are looking to take AP Spanish Lit exam this is the book for you. In addition it is a great read for anyone who is wants to start reading Spanish literature. The books feature a variation of authors from all of Mexico, South and Central America, and Spain. Stories come with a brief biography of the author and provide some background of the writers. In addition colloquial phrases and complex words are defined in the same page they are printed and are marked with numbers making them easy to find in the story and list. In short I really liked this book and recommend it to anyone taking the AP Lit exam or interested in Spanish literature.

The Stories of Eva Luna Review

I regret that it has taken me so long to "discover" Isabel Allende. I was overwhelmed by this marvelous collection of 23 short stores. They are done in a "Scheherazade" format, as Rolf Carle urges in the Prologue: "Tell me a story you have never told anyone before. Make it up for me." Allende foreshadows much of the sensuality of the stories in the Prologue, as the Carle and Luna rest after love making, and in the painting that is their images, "their skin gleams moistly." And they lay "...in intimate complicity." Other reviewers, and I would join them, compare her writing to the "magic realism" in Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and other Latin American authors (what is it about the Latin American experience that lends itself to this motif?). Unquestionably there are the Arabic and Latin influences on her stories, but I'd like to add a third comparison--that of the Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski, and in particular, his one hour long vignettes, 10 in all, that composed his Decalogue. I would be mesmerized by his movies; what aspect of the human condition would he explore in breathtaking and painful accuracy this time? With each story of Allende I felt the same way.

I didn't find a weak story among them. In most there is woven some element of eroticism, or at least plain lust. In several there are acts of revenge achieved. There are the "eternal" themes of Latin America: the Catholic Church, endless civil war, Indians, the rural environment of "Agua Santa," and the colonial experience. And there are the universal themes: greed, the memories of experimental first love suppressed, euthanasia, natural disasters endured, aging and dying. The countries in which the stories take place are never fully identified, sometimes it seems to be Chile, sometimes Peru, others it is in the Caribbean, and then there is the element of "oil" which might mean Venezuela or Ecuador.

Allende's descriptive powers dazzle, whether it be of a person: "She was fleshy, with the milky skin of reddish blondes, the kind of skin that in youth reflects light with opalescent brush stokes, but with age becomes crinkled paper." or of the act of love: "Her mother was transformed into a round, rosy, moaning, opulent siren, an undulating sea anemone, all tentacles and suckers, all mouth and hands and legs and orifices, rolling and turning and cleaving to the large body of Bernal..." or of the evolution of Latin American social structures: "The era of undisguised plunder had been replace by one of corruption and bribery..." or as Indians saw in the coming of the white man, in Walimai: "We explained that the jungle is not something to be tossed over your shoulder and transported like a dead bird..." and, gulp, "...even out of his mind would he ascend the matrimonial gallows."

Ms. Allende is the niece of Salvador, whom she says she did not know well, and is the one who, as democratically elected President of Chile, died during the CIA sponsored coup, on a Sept. 11th famous to others, but not most North Americans, in 1973.

The Stories of Eva Luna are a wonderful introduction to her work, more of which I will certainly be reading.

The Stories of Eva Luna Overview

Isabel Allende delves deep into the world she created in her previous book "Eva Luna" to bring her readers delightful tales of the strange joys and sadnesses of South America. Weaving stories of passion, sensitivity, love and death, she brings to life colourful characters against poor and barren landscapes.

Check Out The Wanderer for $4.49

The Wanderer Review

A wild journey across the Atlantic on a 45-foot sailboat captures the reader from the first page. Sophie, a thirteen year old, is the only girl on the Wanderer. Surrounded by her two cousins Brian and Cody and three uncles Dock, Stew and Mo, she finds not only what her family set out to discover, but also finds out a lot about herself along the way.

As they set sail to Ireland, they make a few stops on the way. Uncle Dock, who says that he's just visiting some old fiends, seems to have another purpose in mind. What could he be up to? Along the way, Cody's "dog log" and Sophie's journal keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Friction and arguments between the characters begin to affect their relationships, even worse, put the family in danger.

The style of the book is what makes it so unique. It's easy to know and feel what the characters feel, even though the entries are very different. Cody's are more brief than Sophie's, but you still are able to see how he's trying to show the rest of the crew that he's a responsible sailor, and person. Sophie's writing is more detailed and explains what is going on with her, and the rest of the crew. I enjoyed the differences between the characters as well. Cody was always cracking jokes, Brian was trying to control the rest of the crew and the uncles were constantly arguing about their children. Sophie's dreams of the sea tell the reader how she feels about her life, which keeps the book suspenseful. I love sailing and the ocean, and so I like how the ocean also was a character in the book, and was described so that you felt as if you were on the boat yourself.

I would definitely recommend this book to not only young readers, but readers of all ages. You don't need to be interested in sailing to find something you love about this book.

Review by MacLean, age 10

The Wanderer Overview

The ocean has always flowed through Sophie's life. It promises journeys of adventure and discovery and she is drawn to it. And when she gets the chance to cross the Atlantic on board her uncle's boat, The Wanderer, she can't wait to set sail. But troubled Sophie has a secret, and deep down she's terrified of where, The Wanderer will take her. For this storm-tossed voyage will also be a journey into the mysterious past of her forgotten childhood. And she, and the rest of the crew aboard, may not survive it.

The Wanderer Specifications

"I am not always such a dreamy girl, listening to the sea calling me. My father calls me Three-sided Sophie: one side is dreamy and romantic; one is logical and down-to-earth; and the third side is hardheaded and impulsive."

Thirteen-year-old Sophie, skipping between "dreamland or earthland or muleland," hears the sea calling her. Much to the concern of her adopted parents, she decides to join her uncles and male cousins on a sailing voyage from Connecticut across the Atlantic to England (and her grandfather Bompie) on a 45-foot sailboat. Not only does she want to make the trip, she feels she has to.

This perilous cross-Atlantic journey will make young readers feel the wind in their hair and the salt spray on their face. Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech (Walk Two Moons) describes the sailing experience with astonishing precision--from the smell of the sea to the intricate workings of The Wanderer itself.

Along the way, Sophie proves her bravery and competence to the rather grumpy all-male crew; intrigues and captivates her cousin Cody with her beautiful, odd stories of Bompie that always somehow end in underwater disaster and apple pie; and spills her heart into a daily journal. Readers get another angle on her, too, as Cody keeps a log that alternates with hers. He grows to know, and like, and wonder about, his new cousin Sophie along with the reader, and as her mysterious past reveals itself bit by bit, we are all right there on the edge of our seats, ready for the boom to crash over to the other side.

Sophie's adventures take her not only straight into perilous waves higher than buildings, but deep into her hidden past. This profound, suspenseful novel will pull you into its swift current and barely let you surface for breath. (Ages 9 to 13) --Karin Snelson

I gave this book four stars because it is such a good book and Sharon Creech is such a good author. There are a whole bunch of other books by her too. The Wanderer was such a heart warming book. There is this girl that tells stories about a boy named Bompie, her name is Sophie. She told a whole bunch of stories about him. When they got to Bompie's little cottage they walked up to the door and the nurse came to open the door and said "come in" so as soon as they got in and walked into Bompie's room and they asked Bompie if he knew who they were he kept on saying the incorret name he always got another chance with another person. Check Out A Christmas Carol (Puffin Classics) for $2.12

A Christmas Carol (Puffin Classics) Review

"A Christmas Carol" is not just A Christmas story, but one of THE Christmas stories -- not only is it instantly recognizable by pretty much everybody, but it's relentlessly copied and spoofed in countless Christmas specials. But taken just by itself, Charles Dickens' yuletide novella is a pretty bleak and bittersweet affair, with brilliant imagery and lots of ghostly weirdness.

Scrooge is... well, a scrooge -- a professional miser who hates Christmas, goodwill, charity, puppies, kittens, his relatives, his employees, and virtually everything else except money.

And on Christmas Eve, his dead partner Jacob Marley comes back, wrapped with supernatural chains, and claims that Scrooge is doomed to the same fate. But he has a chance at redemption: three ghosts representing will visit him that night, taking him on a guided tour of Christmases past, present and yet to come.

So Scrooge is transported on a trio of hourlong trips through time. The childlike Ghost of Christmas Past takes him to his bleak childhood, when he was less jaded and hard. The jolly Ghost of Christmas Present takes him to people's homes on the very next morning, specifically of of his nephew and the poor miner Bob Cratchit. And finally a Ringwraith-like spirit gives him a glimpse of Christmas years in the future... a bleak and terrible future, unless he changes his ways.

You can read plenty of symbolism into a story like "A Christmas Carol"; I've heard speculation about Dickens' father, the Industrial Revolution, spiritualism, and all sorts of other stuff. But at its heart, "A Christmas Carol" is the most powerful when appreciated for its story alone -- a story about a greedy, miserable man who redeems himself by learning to love all humanity.

Dickens' writing is utterly brilliant here. Most of the book is bleak, grimy and painted in shadows, with Dickens only rarely holding back from showing the dark situation of England's poor. A great example is the symbolic children Want and Ignorance ("a stale and shrivelled hand, like that of age, had pinched, and twisted them, and pulled them into shreds"). As for the Grim-Reaperlike third ghost, it's the stuff of nightmares.

But all isn't dark here. Occasionally Dickens splashes it with moments of crystalline brilliance ("It held a branch of fresh green holly in its hand; and... its dress trimmed with summer flowers"). And as dark as the book is, Dickens offers hope for the future.

He also does a brilliant job with Scrooge, " a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Patrick Stewart is awesome! - Robert Moses -
For fans of Patrick Stewart, this is an awesome rendition of an old favorite. His one man show on the London stage must've been spectacular! His acting makes the role very believable. The person playing Bob Cratchit is also very believable.

The ghost of Xmas - E. A Solinas - MD USA

Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire." Having worked hard to make us hate Scrooge, Dickens then deftly displays his skill at slowly revealing how Scrooge became who and what he is, and slowly redeeming him.
