Fairy Houses ... Everywhere! (The Fairy Houses Series) Review

Fairies. Fey. The Sidhe. Shining Ones. Whatever you're prone to call them, they're known by dozens of different names from cultures all over the world so they're not just a British phenomenon.
I happened to find this book in a small mom & pop bookshop downtown & was really amazed at the lush photographs that showed detailed little cottages for the Wee Folk to come & live in.
Oddly enough it's found in the Children's Section of the bookstore & I was looking for something to do when my kids get here for the summer. We're going to make Fairy Houses!
This isn't something new, mind you. Back in the mid-90's I was at a campground with my daughter who was all of three years old at the time & someone had cordoned off a nice, small area they called a `Fairy Garden'. It was filled with small rows of Fairy plants (flowers, pretty weeds) and had a small house build for the Wee Folk. What was really cute was seeing my 3 y/o gingerly walking through it calling out to `Thumbelina'. I'd have given anything for a video camer for that moment.
What is cool is that the author's show a wide range of Fair House construction using a wide variety of natural items from berries, weeds, flowers, grasses, leaves, bark, rocks, seashells, pine cones, twigs, twine and pure imagination. They include even so-called `Fairy Mansions' and they are gorgeous.
Years ago, (I think it was) in Keightley's book "The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves & Other Little People", I read that it's said if you offer the Fey a comfortable place to stay, they will come & in doing so will not allow tricks to be played upon you.
What I didn't care for in the book is the stuff about having to use all natural ingredients including wax. I prefer a hot glue gun to hot wax. Further if I use glue, it's not likely that the little house will disintegrate anytime soon. I want my Fair Houses to stand for a long, long time.
If you're a fan of Tinkerbell, Thumbelina, Spiderwick Chronicles & other Fairy inspired characters in movies, you'll enjoy this book & the idea of giving your kids something to do on at least one or two days this coming summer.
Another thing that is really nifty about the book is that it's divided into various sections for things like beach, meadown, woodland, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring & so on. You can see different ideas for the structures. You'll be surprised to see the ideas for a Gazebo for the Fey or the Bathtub or one of dozens of other ideas.
The book is in pure, lush photo quality color. This gives you an advantage over a book with either hand drawn or shaded pictures because you can see what they used & hopefully find something in the wild that would work as well.
Five stars for being such a great book & fun to leaf through. I've left mine on my coffee table & like to see people's reaction to it when they see it.

Fairy Houses - Martha P. Brodsky - Woodbine, MD, US
I love this book!!! I have given it to many friends for presents. It is so much fun to create your own fairy houses. Inspiring!!!
Not what I expected - Knowledge Monger -
I was expecting it to be faerie houses, with little stories to go along with them, or something to that effect...you know here's the house and then a story about the faeries who live there and pictures of how they decorate it for different seasons...well it's just pictures. There's almost no text in the book, and certainly no stories. As long as you realise it's just page after page of pictures (small ones, 4 per page in many cases) then you won't be disappointed. I'm actually sending my copy back though because I can't really find another use for this book?
Book is small - Pictures are small - D. Roberts - Missouri
This book is beautiful, but it is a small book (I guess I was thinking it would be a coffee table book... my own stupid fault). The pictures are tiny as well; some of them merely an 1 1/2 by 1 1/2.... I actually used a magnifying glass with it. It was worth it, because the fairy houses are great... it's just LITTLE! I'm just surprised they used such a teeny format for a book of pictures!
